COMEDY CENTRAL'S® "DL HUGHLEY: THE ENDANGERED LIST"
HONORED WITH A PEABODY® AWARD
NEW YORK, March 27, 2013 - "DL Hughley: The Endangered List” has been honored with the George Foster Peabody Award in the 72nd Annual Peabody Awards competition, it was announced today.
In announcing the winning programs, the Peabody committee said of the series, “In this provocative satirical documentary, the comedian goes on a crusade to get American black men the same EPA protections afforded snail darters.”
DL Hughley brings comedy to social commentary with his original one-hour social experiment, “DL Hughley: The Endangered List.” Despite promises of a post-racial America in the age of Obama, things have not improved for African-Americans. In this satirical documentary special, Hughley sets out to try to add “the black man” to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Endangered Species list. He travels across the nation gathering evidence and interviewing experts on race, religion, and politics in a quest to save his people. Throughout his journey, interspersed with segments from an all-new stand-up set, Hughley recruits a group of white sorority girls for support, challenges an anti-gay preacher, and even tries to see eye to eye with a Neo-Nazi.
“Holy sh*t I can't believe I won a Peabody Award!” says DL Hughley. “I'm sure R Kelly would say - did you mean a Pee on Somebody Award? In all seriousness, I am beyond excited and so completely honored.”
“DL Hughley: The Endangered List” is executive produced by Hughley, Tim Greenberg, Miles Kahn, and Stuart Miller. Dave Becky and Michael Rotenberg of 3Arts Entertainment are Executive Producers. Sonya Vaughn is Associate Producer. JoAnn Grigioni and Jonas Larsen are the Executives in Charge of Production for COMEDY CENTRAL.
The Peabody Awards were announced today by the University of Georgia's Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, which has administered the Peabody Award program since its inception in 1940. The awards will be presented at a luncheon ceremony to be held at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City on May 20, 2013. Scott Pelley, anchor of “The CBS Evening News,” will be this year’s emcee.
In addition to “DL Hughley: The Endangered List,” other COMEDY CENTRAL series that have received Peabody Awards include “The Colbert Report” last year and in 2007, “South Park” in 2006 and "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," which was honored in 2000 and 2004 for the series' "Indecision" election-year coverage. The network's first Peabody recipients were "Mystery Science Theater 3000" in 1994 and "Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist" in 1999.
