Ride it! Your bike, that is. It's good for the environment and your health. If you like doing it with a lot of people, consider walking, carpooling and public transit. You'll enjoy it and so will they.
Wanna go all the way? Do it responsibly. If you're buying a car, pick the least-polluting, most efficient one that meets your needs. Maybe it's a hybrid. Or maybe it's a wagon instead of an SUV. Over the average lifetime of an American car, a 40-mpg car will save roughly $3,000 in fuel costs compared with a 20-mpg car.
Let someone get in there with some tools. A tune-up could boost your miles per gallon anywhere from 4 to 40 percent. A new air filter could get you 10 percent more miles per gallon. Somewhere downtown in a dark garage there's a greasy guy in a jumpsuit who wants to help.
