[--Live at Gotham Q&A--]
Q. Name?
A. Vargus Mason
Q. Where do you live?
A. Los Angeles, CA
Q. Who is your comedy hero?
A. Richard Pryor, because like Lenny Bruce he broke the mold of comedy, a pure genius. Also my moms, cause she could find humor in anything. One time she was breathing in gamma particles from a tube to find blood clots in her lungs. She took it out of her mouth, pointed it at me and asked, "Do you want a hit?"
Q. What made you decide to strive for a career in comedy?
A. It was the one best gift I got from God. I always wanted it. I'd been making people laugh since the second grade.
Q. What career would your parents have chosen for you?
A. Moms always wanted me to do what made me happy. I once joked that she'd be proud of me even if I was a porn star. Her comment when she heard the joke, "porn stars make a lot of money baby, I'd be proud of you."
Q. Have you ever tanked onstage?
A. When I first started I was once booed off the stage in front of 1500 people opening for Frankie Beverly Maze. Just a little too green for the gig. I was grateful in hindsight, bombing makes you stronger as a comic. It makes you retool what you're doing. I went home and wrote jokes. 4 years later I finally made it back to the same club and got a standing ovation.
Q. Everyone's a geek in some way. What kind of a geek are you?
A. Man, I am a big chess geek. I also love salsa dancing. My wife also says a geek cause I'm a black man who likes Sting.
Q. What song is trapped inside your brain right now?
A. Police: Synchronicity then about every 5 minutes Gnarls Barkley's "When was the last time you danced," jumps in.
Q. What will you do with yourself after the fall of civilization?
A. Declare myself the pirate king. Or maybe I'd gather up all of the books until they were a giant mountain of words that I would read consuming all knowledge. Then ironically my reading glasses would break. Naw, I'd probably sit around in my draws playing playstation and eating cheetos, what I did last Tuesday.
Q. What is your greatest memory from your time with Live at Gotham?
A. Laughter from the perfect audience.
