John Evans

[--Live at Gotham Q&A--]

Q. Name?
A. John Evans

Q. Where do you live?
A. Los Angeles. It's awesome there. It's like agreat big dream factory.

Q. Who is your comedy hero?
A. I grew up listening to George Carlin records and Bill Cosby, and of course Steve Martin. Lenny Bruce should get more credit for breaking down barriers and making it possible for comedians to say whatever they want without fear getting arrested. But I think Bill Hicks walked that fine line of having a serious point of view but making it accessible to the average person. He made people laugh, but on his terms.

Q. What made you decide to strive for a career in comedy?
A. I worked at a sporting goods store. One day they changed our uniform and our new name tags had the words"fun counselor" on them. I said there has to be somethig I am good at that doesn't involve daily humiliation. I started with an Andy Rooney impression and a dream. I dropped the Andy Rooney impression and got on Comedy Central.

Q. What career would your parents have chosen for you?
A. My dad worked for Atari 1980-1984. So my dad thought I should get into computers. He would always say, "You better learn this stuff. It's going to be the future." I was like whatever dad, just keep bringing home games. More floppy discs.

Q. Have you ever tanked onstage?
A. I worked a "Rib-Fest" in Mankato Minnesota. They had all these tables under a tent so people could get out of the sun. Some genius decided it would be good to have live comedy under the tent. I did 30 minutes for 8 people sitting at a round table, so 4 of them had their back to me and the other four were so focused on their corn cobblits and funnell cake I didn't even get a chuckle.

Q. Everyone's a geek in some way. What kind of a geek are you?
A. I am a big collecter geek. I love Thrift stores, Flea Markets , Garage Sales. I collect vintage furniture, 1960's and 70's stereos and T.V's., Metal lunchboxes, mushroom stuff, salt and pepper shakers, big-eyed artwork, those statues that say things like "I love you this much" or "World's greatest golfer".

Q. What song is trapped inside your brain right now?
A. I've got a brand new pair of rollerskates by Melanie Safka. That song is so cool. Also anything by Slayer. Seriously, all kidding aside, Slayer does rule.

Q. What will you do with yourself after the fall of civilization?
A. I'm more of a glass is half-full person. That question is a bit of a downer.

Q. What is your greatest memory from your time with Live at Gotham?
A. Just getting the call and finding out that I was doing Live @ Gotham was a very exciting moment. After my set I was talking to my manager Rich Miller and I could see how excited he was that my set went really well. I was just on such a high that it went off without a hitch. Also my wife was there to share it with me so. It was an unbelievable experience all the way around.
