Cristela Alonzo

[--Live at Gotham Q&A--]

Q. Name?
A. Cristela Alonzo

Q. Where do you live?
A. Los Angeles (as if I would have to go into further detail...Los Angeles, what, Ohio?)

Q. Who is your comedy hero?
A. Steven Wright. He was the first comedian I ever saw in my life, on TV. I was about 8. I didn't understand what he was doing exactly (remember, I was 8)...but I loved it. It was incredible. I never strive to be like my heroes though, because really, I'm afraid I would fall short...I mean, they are, after all, my heroes.

Q. What made you decide to strive for a career in comedy?
A. The money. Ha. I'm so kidding. I think I did it for a year before I got paid for it (a nice fifty dollars thankyouverymuch). It was really a need to make people laugh. I think all comedians have it. I personally think it's ridiculous that I get to do what I love. Oh, I also like sleeping in, that was the big factor...that and being able to watch The View.

Q. What career would your parents have chosen for you?
A. What career would your parents have chosen for you? I was raised by a single mom who kept telling me, "If this doesn't work out, there's always beauty school."

Q. Have you ever tanked onstage?
A. Have you ever tanked onstage, and, if so, can you briefly relive the trauma for us? Jeez, this sounds like a dramatic question. It reminds me of the part in every Law and Order episode where they have that revealing monologue, towards the end, of either how the crime was committed, or what the person was thinking when they were committing the crime.

Q. Everyone's a geek in some way. What kind of a geek are you?
A. I love Scrabble. I'm horribly addicted to pop culture. I love bad movies and songs. I work out at the gym to the soundtrack from Rocky IV. I'm addicted to Ebay, where currently, my most recent purchases are a Bee Gees record player and a Donne and Marie Osmond record case.

Q. What song is trapped inside your brain right now?
A. "There's Always Someone Cooler Than You," by Ben Folds. I love him...and living in Hollywood, I think it's very fitting.

Q. What will you do with yourself after the fall of civilization?
A. Probably pop in a Golden Girls DVD, or maybe Sylvester Stallone's "Over the Top" (best arm wrestling movie ever).

Q. What is your greatest memory from your time with Live at Gotham?
A. I have a vague memory of holding a beer in my hand, and singing karaoke to Def Leppard.
